France and Italy had postponed this project, planned for 2023, to guarantee good connectivity between these two countries during the landslide on the A43.

The choice of the period to close the tunnel was motivated by the prefecture of Haute-Savoie, France, and the regional authorities of the Aosta Valley, Italy, due to the fact that autumn is considered the period with the least impact on the economy of the two regions.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a motorway tunnel between France and Italy under Mont Blanc in the Alps.

It connects Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France with Courmayeur, Aosta Valley, Italy via Route Nationale 205 (France) and Traforo T1 Italy, forming the European route E25, notably the motorways serving Geneva (A40 France) and Turin (A5 Italy) .

It is one of the main transalpine transport routes, especially for Italy, which relies on this tunnel to transport up to a third of its goods to northern Europe.

The tunnel shortens the route from France to Turin by 50 kilometers and to Milan by 100 km.
